Setting up your library

Once you have installed Melvec, open it from the Applications folder or search for it using Spotlight ( Cmd + Space) and type “Melvec”. Follow these steps to set up your library:

  • When the app opens for the first time, it shows a welcome screen and asks you to choose a library root. Click the button and select the folder that contains all your media items.

  • After you select the folder, Melvec begins scanning the videos, images inside it. This may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, or longer, depending on the number of videos and the speed of your storage device. Do not close the app while the import is in progress.

  • After the import process is complete, Melvec will take you to the collections section. From there, you can browse your files by selecting the relevant collections.

Notes: Deeply nested collections are flattened by combining their names and organizing them by year. You can rename collections later in Settings > Collections.

  • You can then preview your media files and add metadata such as tags, title, quality, and star rating to individual items.

Automatic metadata generation

Once you have all the files imported, you can start generating the AI based metadata extraction like description, category, titles by going to Settings -> advanced -> AI settings

This process need AI models to be installed first. The details of this process is explained here.

If your AI models are installed, then you can press the start generation button in the "Batchprocess all media..." section.

This may take few mins to several hours based on your system configuration and model tier chosen. To optimize the time taken to generate metadata for each media item, we strongly suggest to:

  • Close all other application to free up memory and processing.
  • Keep they system connected to a power source - Do Not
  • keep the system in a hotter place.
Pro tip

If you have hundreds/thousands media items, you may choose to stop the process and restart time to time till all your media items. The system will start from where it left.

Video previews

If you wish to see video previews while doing mouse over on the thumbnails in collections, playlists, you have to toggle the Video Previews in Settings -> Display section. When you do it for the first time, it would let you know how many videos are pending for privew generation. You can start the preview generation by clicking the start button. If you are importing any video there after, it would autometically create the previews at the time of import.
